Library Card Now Doubles as a Transit Pass

A pilot in Ardenmouth lets readers tap their card on buses, trams and the Alder Line.

Library members in Ardenmouth can now use their cards to travel on buses, trams and the Alder Line, under a pilot that links two systems that rarely talk to each other.

Fares are capped at the day rate, and borrowers who return books on time earn small credits towards travel. The idea came from a branch librarian who noticed how many readers made a special journey to return a single book.

The pilot covers the first 20,000 cards. If it works, the scheme will extend to every branch next spring.
