- Description: Paying a generator to switch off sounds absurd. The economics of storage are beginning to make it look like good business.

For most of the past decade, the quiet truth of renewable power was that it could be too successful. On a windy night, with demand low, a farm might be paid to switch off because the grid had nowhere to put its electricity.

A new project on the coast near Kestrel Quay is trying to change that arithmetic. Instead of stopping the turbines, the operator stores surplus power in a bank of batteries and sells it back when evening demand rises. In its first season, the site earned more from the two hours after sunset than from the entire windiest night of the year.

## Waiting as a product

The commercial insight is that time has a price. Electricity at three in the morning is nearly worthless; the same electricity at seven in the evening is valuable. A store that can wait turns the difference into revenue.

> We stopped thinking of ourselves as a wind farm and started thinking of ourselves as a business that sells patience.

Analysts caution that batteries age, that grid fees are shifting and that early returns may not last. But the model has changed the question investors ask. They no longer ask only how much a turbine can produce. They ask how well the system can choose its moment.
