Three figures published before breakfast have rearranged the day’s argument. None is dramatic on its own. Read together, they describe an economy that is cooling without cracking, and households that are quietly rewriting their budgets.

## 4.1 per cent

The central bank held its rate at 4.1 per cent and, more importantly, changed one sentence in its statement. “Remains restrictive” became “is expected to ease gradually.” Markets heard a timetable. Mortgage brokers heard a reason to wait another month before fixing.

## 38,000 jobs

The quarterly labour revision removed 38,000 jobs from earlier estimates, almost all of them in part-time retail and hospitality. Full-time employment was barely touched. That distinction matters: the slack is arriving where people have the least ability to absorb it.

## £212

The least discussed figure is the average weekly spend in a typical household basket, up £3 on last quarter and £19 on last year. Spending on essentials has risen faster than the headline rate, while spending on everything else has fallen for the third quarter running.

> The pattern is not panic. It is people deciding, calmly and in aggregate, that the next purchase can wait.

Together the numbers suggest a slower autumn rather than a sharp one. The risk is not a collapse but a long, quiet squeeze on the businesses that depend on discretionary spending: the cafés, repair shops and independent retailers that make a high street feel alive.
